The patterns

Why do we keep repeating the same patterns?

We all have patterns. Some support us, helping us grow, build healthy relationships and create lives we enjoy. Others leave us feeling stuck, frustrated or disconnected from the life we want to live.

You might find yourself:

  • 01

Putting everyone else’s needs before your own, even when you’re exhausted.

  • 02

Working harder and achieving more, but never feeling quite good enough.

  • 03

Avoiding difficult conversations because you’re afraid of conflict or rejection.

  • 04

Constantly questioning your decisions and seeking reassurance from others.

  • 05

Falling into the same relationship dynamics, even with different people.

  • 06

Knowing what matters to you, but making choices that don’t reflect those values.

Often, we recognise these behaviours. We might even promise ourselves that next time we’ll do things differently. Yet when we find ourselves in familiar situations, the same emotions arise and we fall back into old habits.

To change these patterns, we need to understand what’s driving them.

The Origin of Your Love explores the beliefs that shape how you think, feel and behave, helping you understand why these patterns keep repeating and how to begin changing them.

Combining personal stories, practical exercises and guided reflection, this book will help you uncover what’s keeping you stuck, reconnect with who you truly are and begin creating meaningful, lasting change in your life.

From Dan

Why I wrote this book

For much of my life, I believed I’d had a relatively normal childhood.

It wasn’t until my early thirties that I began to understand just how much my childhood experiences had shaped who I was and how I related to the world.

My father struggled with addiction, my mother experienced severe depression, and I spent much of my early childhood being raised by my grandparents.

There was a lot of love in my childhood, particularly from my grandparents, but there was also instability, fear and uncertainty.

I learned early that love and connection could disappear. I learned to earn attention by being useful, pleasing others and putting my own needs aside.

As an adult, I built a successful career, travelled the world, lived overseas and even opened a nightclub in Mexico.

From the outside, I had created an exciting and successful life.

Yet underneath it all, I was repeating the same patterns.

In my career, I pushed myself to achieve, often tying my self-worth to my success. In relationships, I found myself overgiving, abandoning my own needs and struggling to trust love when it was offered.

I understood that these behaviours weren’t serving me, but understanding that didn’t stop me from repeating them.

Then one evening, sitting alone on a beach in Brunswick Heads after the end of another painful relationship, I asked myself:

“How many sunsets have I missed?”

How much of my life had I spent trying to be chosen, seeking approval and chasing something I believed I needed to feel worthy?

I began to recognise that the same beliefs I had developed as a child were still shaping my emotions, behaviours and the reality I was experiencing as an adult.

It wasn’t just about the relationships I was choosing. It was about how I was relating to myself, to others and to life.

I began to understand that if I wanted a different reality, I needed to change the behaviours and beliefs that were keeping my old story alive.

That understanding became the foundation of The Origin of Your Love.

The beliefs beneath the patterns

Your beliefs shape your reality

The Never Ending Story: a circular diagram where beliefs lead to emotions, emotions to behaviours, behaviours to reality, and reality back to beliefs

Throughout our lives, we develop beliefs about ourselves, other people and the world around us.

Many of these beliefs begin in childhood, shaped by our experiences and the ways we learned to find safety, connection, love and acceptance.

We might learn that we need to achieve to be worthy, please others to be accepted, remain strong to avoid rejection or hide parts of ourselves to feel safe.

Over time, these beliefs become part of how we understand ourselves and the world.

They influence our emotional reactions, drive our behaviours and shape the experiences we create.

Those experiences can then reinforce the very beliefs that created them.

This is what I call the Never Ending Story.

A repeating cycle of beliefs, emotions, behaviours and experiences that can keep us stuck, often without us recognising what’s driving it.

Understanding our story is the first step towards changing it.

What’s inside

What you’ll discover inside the book

The Self-Love Map: a five-point web exploring self-talk, self-trust, self-acceptance, self-respect and self-alignment

The Origin of Your Love takes you on a journey of self-discovery, helping you understand how your beliefs were formed, how they influence your life today and how you can begin changing the behaviours keeping them alive.

Your journey begins with the Self-Love Map, a practical reflection tool exploring five important areas of your relationship with yourself. It helps you identify where your relationship with yourself is strong and where you would like to make changes.

  • 01

    Self-Talk

    How you speak to yourself.

  • 02

    Self-Trust

How you trust your own decisions and judgement.

  • 03

    Self-Acceptance

How you accept yourself for who you are.

  • 04

    Self-Respect

How you honour your needs, values and boundaries.

  • 05

    Self-Alignment

How your choices and behaviours reflect who you truly are.

The journey

From there, the book guides you through five steps.

  1. 1

    Understand Your Never Ending Story

Explore the experiences and beliefs that shaped you. Discover how your beliefs influence your emotions, behaviours and reality, creating patterns that repeat throughout your life.

Through guided reflection, you’ll begin identifying your own Never Ending Story and the beliefs driving it.

  2. 2

    Take Ownership of Your Behaviours

Recognise the behaviours keeping your old beliefs alive, including the small everyday actions that reinforce your patterns.

Explore how these behaviours influence your relationships, work and wellbeing, and take responsibility for what you want to change.

  3. 3

    Create Your Authentic Anchor

Reconnect with who you truly are, beyond the beliefs and conditions you’ve learned to place on yourself.

Create your Authentic Anchor, a clear picture of how you want to live, how you want to feel and the choices that reflect your needs and values.

  4. 4

    Complete Small Commitments

Identify small, practical changes that align with your Authentic Anchor.

Learn how consistent action creates new emotional experiences, strengthens new beliefs and begins changing the patterns that have kept you stuck.

  5. 5

    Evolve Through Practice

Use the Evolve Sequence to recognise old patterns as they arise in everyday life. Bring your emotions into awareness, get curious about the underlying beliefs and consciously choose a different response.

Through consistent practice, you’ll create new experiences, strengthen new beliefs and begin making lasting changes in how you think, feel and behave.

Beyond awareness

Understanding yourself is the beginning. Change takes practice.

Awareness alone doesn’t create lasting change. You can understand why you behave a certain way and still find yourself repeating the same pattern.

That’s because the beliefs shaping our lives have often been reinforced through years of emotional experiences and repeated behaviours. Changing them takes conscious action and practice.

Throughout the book, you’ll be invited to move beyond understanding your patterns and begin practising different ways of responding in everyday life.

You don’t need to change everything at once.

Small, consistent changes in how you speak to yourself, communicate your needs, make decisions and respond to difficult emotions can begin reshaping your relationship with yourself and the reality you experience.

Experienced, not just read

This book is designed to be experienced, not just read.

Each chapter contains moments to pause and reflect, with practical exercises that build upon one another.

You’ll be guided to explore your beliefs, recognise your emotional responses, identify the behaviours keeping your patterns alive and create small commitments to change.

You don’t need to have done years of personal development work.

You just need to be willing to get curious about yourself, take responsibility for the behaviours you can change and practise doing things differently.

Your story can change

The past has shaped who you are. It doesn’t have to determine who you become.

You are not trying to become a completely different person. You’re learning to recognise the beliefs and behaviours that no longer serve you and make choices that reflect who you truly are.

To stop responding automatically from old stories and begin responding consciously. To strengthen your relationship with yourself and start creating a life that reflects your needs, values and Authentic Self.

And that change begins with you.

“Dan’s coaching challenged me to live by my values, encouraged deeper reflection, and helped me sit with all parts of myself, allowing me to let go of shame.”
